Paint correction is effective on swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation that sit within the clear coat, but deeper scratches that have gone through to the base colour usually need touch-up paint or panel work instead. A proper assessment beforehand will identify which category a scratch falls into.
Machine polishing does remove a very thin layer of clear coat as part of levelling out imperfections, which is why paint thickness is checked first. A correctly measured process leaves plenty of clear coat remaining for long-term protection.
The time needed depends on the paint's condition and how many stages of polishing are required, ranging from a single light pass to a more involved multi-stage correction. A heavily swirled or neglected car will take longer than one that's been well maintained.
